The Muddler Minnow is one of the most enduring streamer patterns in fly fishing. Originally tied by Don Gapen in 1936 to imitate sculpin, its combination of a spun deer hair head, mottled turkey wing, and compact profile gives it the versatility to imitate sculpin, dace, and small baitfish.

The deer hair head pushes water and allows the fly to be fished at different depths depending on your retrieve and presentation. Fish it dead-drifted as a hopper-style pattern, swing it through current for trout, or strip it aggressively as a streamer. It can even be used behind a larger fly to imitate a stunned or disoriented baitfish.

The Muddler isn't limited to trout water, either. It's effective for smallmouth and largemouth bass and can produce in saltwater and brackish environments for species such as redfish and speckled trout.
